For Friday, I skipped out on panels because I had my eye on a 1am showcase with one of my favorite artists of all time, Juliana Hatfield. I’ve been a fan since about 1990 when she was in the Blake Babies, and have loved all her work since them. Wow, that is a long time. I truly love Hey Babe (her 1992 release that supposedly she doesn’t like – but Everybody Loves Me But You is amazing imho) and her first release with the Juliana Hatfield Three (1993) Become What You Are. I was surprised to realize that she was playing it in its entirety for this set. Great songs like My Sister, This is the Sound and Spin the Bottle. I’ve only seen her live a few times, so this was a special show, and I loved every minute.
I did get out to see my friends in Quiet Company at an afternoon party. They continue to rock impressively, with amazing new album Transgressor. Congrats to them for winning Best Rock Band at the Austin Music Awards on Wednesday night. I love them. And for a break between, I hit a film (any SXSW where I can squeeze in a film is a good). I had the ideal opportunity to see All Things Must Pass, the Colin Hanks’ documentary about Tower Records. Quite good, and a perfect complement to all things SXSW – music, film and tech.
