Rhett Miller, lead singer of the Old 97’s, was in town on Thursday night for a rare solo gig at Threadgill’s. He played unaccompanied to a very big crowd that was very into the music, songs from across the Old 97’s catalog as well as his solo CDs, The Believer and The Instigator. Old 97’s have a new CD, Blame It On Gravity, and Rhett played the new single from that one, “My Two Feet,” among many others including “Jagged,” “Come Around,” and “Rollerskate Skinny,” and closed with “Time Bomb.”
I’ve seen Old 97’s many times, and have even caught a Rhett show with full band at SXSW a few years back. But, seeing him perform, alone on stage, playing the songs in a stripped down manner, this was rather special, and offered new insight into his charm and talent. A lovely night with a lovely person.
